Ruru Pinot Noir 2018 Receives Gold Medal in New World Wine Awards

Ruru Pinot Noir 2018, produced by Immigrant’s Vineyard in Alexandra, Central Otago, has been named in the Top 50 wines at the 2019 New World Wine Awards, winning a Gold Medal

Immigrant’s Vineyard’s Ruru Pinot Noir 2018 is set to be at the top of shopping lists after the wine was announced as a Gold medal winner at the 2019 New World Wine Awards, earning a place in the competition’s prestigious Top 50 wines.

The wine was recognised out of more than 1,274 entries submitted by 176 wineries from New Zealand and overseas. It will now be available in New World stores nationwide for the next five weeks.

Lucienne, owner/viticulturist at Immigrant’s Vineyard says the accolade is a great achievement for them and an exciting development for the Ruru Brand

“This was the first time we could enter the awards, as it requires availability of at least 4000 bottles, which we don’t usually have. We are chuffed with the Gold Medal and inclusion in the Top 50, as it will put our brand onto the New Zealand map.”

On a mission to connect its customers with the best quality affordable wines, the New World Wine Awards is all about top quality wines at great prices. New World rewards the Top 50 Gold medal winners with nationwide distribution and promotional support through 135 stores, where the winning wines are eagerly anticipated by consumers each year.

“Our Ruru Pinot Noir 2018 is grown right here in Alexandra. Our vineyard is one of the southernmost vineyards in the world and we think you can really taste this. The wine is feminine and very fruit forward. Can be enjoyed by itself, but is a great accompaniment to lamb, pasta and chicken dishes. A very affordable Central Otago gem.”

Now in its 17th year, New World Wine Awards were judged by a panel of 17 independent wine experts, headed by returning Chair of Judges Jim Harré. Every entry was blind tasted, with only varietal, vintage and country of origin noted. Entries were evaluated using the same 100-point scale as other wine competitions worldwide, which benchmarks entries against what a perfect wine should be like.

Availability and affordability are key entry criteria – entries must retail for $25 or less, and there must be at least 4,000 bottles (or 2,000 for emerging varietals) available for sale through New World stores across the country.

We are happy to have received the 5 Star Raymond Chan award for our 2017 Gewürztraminer! Check out Raymond's comments about our Gewürztraminer below.

Ruru Central Otago Gewürztraminer 2017 iconStarGoldiconStarGoldiconStarGoldiconStarGoldiconStarGold

Bright pale straw-yellow colour, very pale edged. The nose is very fresh and youthfully taut with a finely concentrated core of white florals and exotic rose-petal notes along with lychees, subtle spices, Turkish Delight and a suggestion of honey and musk. The fruit is expressed with clarity and has intensity. Medium-dry to taste, the palate has tightly bound and penetrating flavours of exotic florals, with hints of white pepper and spices, Turkish Delight and honey.

The fruit forms a concentrated heart with soft, rounded textures and balanced acidity. The wine has a fresh firmness but flows smoothly with good linearity, leading to a sustained finish. This is a taut and penetrating medium-dry Gewürztraminer with good depth and intensity of exotic florals, spices and musk and a smooth mouthfeel.

Serve with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the ‘Immigrant’s Vineyard’, a portion given a few hours skin contact, the remainder WBP, and all fermented in stainless-steel to 13.3% alc. and 7.2 g/L RS. 18.5/20 Feb 2018
